Songs of Revolution

This digital exhibit features the songs and poems composed by activist women in São Paulo's urban periphery from the 1960s to 1990s. Songs, poems, and chants were a vital part of movement culture; many of them reference activists' common rural origin, folk songs from Brazil's northeast, and most of all, tenants of progressive Catholicism, including liberation theology.

See "Poet of the Mothers' Clubs" for an English translation of Odete Marques's poem Veteranas, an account of women's activism during the dictatorship.
